1895: Oscar Wilde lost his criminal libel case against the Marquess of Queensberry, who had accused the writer of homosexual practices.

1908: Actress Bette Davis was born.

1964: American Army General Douglas MacArthur died at the age 84.

1976: Reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes died at the age 72.
