Nothing to be embarrassed about. Teachers are not machines, they are human! It is better to let go and and speak out not bottling things up until breaking point is reached. If your health broke you could not help anyone, not even yourself.
If you were to send home a letter with each child tomorrow saying the school was to close down a week on Friday, I bet ALL the parents would turn up to put their oar in.
I wouldn’t bet your life savings on it Grannymar!
I’m under no illusion at how people view my leadership/teaching …. were we to close in the morning I guarantee you that all families know where they would move their children to.
The old adage …. ‘far away hills’ applies. They don’t see that the pupils are happy … they only focus on insignificant things …. because there are no significant things!
The one thing I can always say with hand on my heart is ….. ‘the pupil comes first!’.
On many an occassion the pupil has come well before the teacher and others.
We have this year’s school tour plannned …. what are parents complaining about? The length of the tour! We leave at 8.00 a.m. and return at 7.00 p.m. approx. They have a full good value for money day - both an educational and fun filled day! We’ve usually gone on same length of time tours, always on a Friday, pupils come home tired but very happy!
Some schools if they go on school tour return by 3.00 p.m. so that teacher’s personal time isn’t interefered with. No mention of the additional time in the morning and evening we give up free gratis for the sake of a fun filled day for their children!
Sorry Grannymar …. to burst the bubble … loyalty doesn’t enter into it anymore.
A few years ago volunteers were readily available but now they’re not. C’est la vie.
All the extra I do in school I do because I want to …. if I was looking for acknowledgement I’d never do it because I’d still be waiting!
The adage ‘Parents want their cake but they want to eat it also’ comes to mind.
Another example of apathy: I send out a school calendar well in June for the following September/school year so that parents know well in advance what’s happening if planning holidays etc. but I keep getting parents asking if we’re off for a week on acertain date or not. If not why not and why weren’t they told about it etc.
Either way it’s a no win situation.
I can see why some Principals/teachers switch off when parents are mentioned. (I’m not defending teachers … cos teachers can be trouble/awkward too … I’m only commenting on my situation)
By the way …. for as long as I remain in teaching I will give 100% to the job.
The day I move on I’ll move on happy that I’ve done MY best and I’ll not look back.
I don’t expect gratitude and the day I move on will not be the day I’ll accept gratitude coming my way.
I’ll not be bitter …. I am paid to do a job and I try my best each day. ONly thing about teaching is that the ‘raw material’ are actual human beings that are moulded to the best of my ability.
Paddy I am sure you do a fine job with the moulding.
Paddy, how about a google public calendar for the school showing the holidays? Then at least you could send them to that when they ask, instead of having to double check yourself.
You could include the URL on every piece of paper that gets sent home with the kids!
Hi Elly …welcome
All the parents have the school website address.
The diary page has every closure listed and the reason behind the closure. The school url is also listed on every single letter we send out.
The site is updated weekly at the very minimum. The site receives more international visitors than it does local visitors!
I can only provide the information … I can’t get them to read it. I’d trust the children more when it comes to doing something.
The main thing is that every single child in our school is happy coming to school …. I know they are …. that’s the main thing.
It’s the adults who have the fits, are inattentive, troublesome etc. ….
