Kilmackillogue Cemetery - an observation

As part of our hill walking excursion day we toured a little of the area.

We arrived at Kilmackillogue.

I got a few nice shots of the pub and the pier which I’ll post later.

We explored Kilmackillogue Cemetery.

Kilmackillogue Cemetery - exposed bones

We found an open tomb ….. with bones exposed for all to see.

Kilmackillogue Cemetery - exposed skulls

We also found another open tomb ….. with skulls exposed for all to see.

It’s a disgrace that we have so liitle respect for the people who have gone before us that we can’t look after their remains properly.

Graveyards are links to our past.

Our past has shaped who we are …. the people who came before us have shaped the country we live in.

Our graveyards should be well maintained ….. in Kilmackillogue Cemetery this wasn’t the case …. Kerry County Council should be ashamed of themselves.

Why aren’t our graveyards given pride of place? A lot of them are stuck on the side of the worst piece of hill available or stuck in the worst drained piece of ground that could possibly be found.

(Thankfully I’m going to be cremated when my time comes)

Can we not show our ancestors a little gratitude?

Rest In Peace to the forgotten of Kilmackillogue Cemetery.

Crikey that’s awful . . I mean we have ‘neglected’ cemetaries but open tombs? Local councils look after the really old ones the others are privately run and maintained. Me? I’m going to be scattered to the four winds I think. Now, I’m off for a hill walk of my own on this glorious Autumn day . . enjoy your weekend.

Clearly you are an enthusiast. On for doing one of these sometime? I can personally recommend the Galty ridge walk or the Comeragh Challenge (from the Nire valley).

Baino ~ welcome to my ‘virtual cottage’! Pull up an old súgán chair, and heat yourself by the fire. Push the crane out of the way …. that’s it … perfect!

Re. the state of our graveyards …. some are well kept but a lot are not. Even those well kept will have a pile of old wreaths and plastic imitations thrown over the neighbouring wall or ditch.

That’s why I don’t want to end up in a graveyard. Where I want to end up is something I’ve yet to figure our (must do a post on this).

TC ~ I wouldn’t call myself a zealot of hill walking. I’m off to take the dogs on a four mile walk shortly and I’ll get as much pleasure out of that as I did on top of a mountain yesterday.

The biggest difficulty I have with hill walking is motivation …. after a week in school I’m totally wrecked ….. sometimes I can’t resist the urge to crash out.

I don’t like organised walks …. too many people about …. too many orders being given ….. and I always like to take some bit of history into what I’m doing.

Like my ‘What kind of soul am I?’ post …. I like to connect with history/the past.

I hope to be scattered to the four winds, but not yet!
