I've just come across this webpage, and I will comment if I may; I think neglected graveyards are beautiful. I think they are entirely superior to those graveyards with mown lawns and sparkly polished granite headstones which desperately try and hide the fact that somebody is dead. I think the decayed flowers, perished plastic wreaths, crumbling stones and exposed bones are entirely fitting for a place of death. That is after all what happens to us when we die! And while I am sure it is a happy accident, they have reminded me, when I have been lucky enough to visit such places, that we remember the dead so often rather selfishly, thinking of what we have lost, rather than celebrating the mystery that they, like us, lived, and we, like them, will die.

Baino ~ welcome to my 'virtual cottage'! Pull up an old súgán chair, and heat yourself by the fire. Push the crane out of the way .... that's it ... perfect!

Re. the state of our graveyards .... some are well kept but a lot are not. Even those well kept will have a pile of old wreaths and plastic imitations thrown over the neighbouring wall or ditch.

That's why I don't want to end up in a graveyard. Where I want to end up is something I've yet to figure our (must do a post on this).

TC ~ I wouldn't call myself a zealot of hill walking. I'm off to take the dogs on a four mile walk shortly and I'll get as much pleasure out of that as I did on top of a mountain yesterday.

The biggest difficulty I have with hill walking is motivation .... after a week in school I'm totally wrecked ..... sometimes I can't resist the urge to crash out.

I don't like organised walks .... too many people about .... too many orders being given ..... and I always like to take some bit of history into what I'm doing.

Like my 'What kind of soul am I?' post .... I like to connect with history/the past.

Clearly you are an enthusiast. On for doing one of these sometime? I can personally recommend the Galty ridge walk or the Comeragh Challenge (from the Nire valley).

Crikey that's awful . . I mean we have 'neglected' cemetaries but open tombs? Local councils look after the really old ones the others are privately run and maintained. Me? I'm going to be scattered to the four winds I think. Now, I'm off for a hill walk of my own on this glorious Autumn day . . enjoy your weekend.
