Limerick - the criminal’s shooting range to have competition!
I see that a land owner in Limerick has applied for planning permission to build the country’s first underground shooting range.
The muder capital of Europe and an underground shooting range ….. now that’s more than a little ironic! ![]()
The adage “Limerick: Open your mind, hand over your wallet.” could now be changed to “Limerick: Open your gun case, shoot to your heart’s content.”
Guns it seems are becoming more and more common place …. both officially and unofficially. Even hand guns are held legally by more people than ever before.
I see that a guy in Dublin pulled a gun on a barman who had refused to serve him. When Gardaí tracked him down they were surprised to discover that he had never been in trouble before.
He is now!

Put all the guns and owners underground and let then shoot each other!
What’s the point Grannymar?
More fools would take their place ….
I suggest you go figure out how far away athlacca and Dromin are actually from Limerick City before you go lumping “the murder capital” in with your story.
Also, you left out the number of objections to the firing range received by Limerick County (that’s right I said county, not city) council.
Another omission is the statement that only licensed gun owners would be admitted.
But why let the full facts get in the way of a good sweeping generalisation
*yawn*
suggest away …..
but you’re right … why let the full facts get in the way of a good sweeping generalisation.
‘Limerick’ …. covers Limerick city and county.
Maybe we should say ‘ murder county’ rather than ‘murder city’!
All the objections in the world still doesn’t change the fact that Limerick (county or city or whatever) is now synonymously associated with guns, gun crime, murder, etc.
As the unlicensed gun owners are shooting away to their hearts’ content … the licensed ones will now have a place to go.
Pehaps they could organise shooting competitions!
God, I don’t understand the gun culture at all. Maybe in the US where the west was won through the power of the gun but here, there . . .what’s the fascination? We have strict gun licensing laws here and a buy back program for guns that are no longer required, seems to be working but doesn’t stop illegal use. I hate the things.
Illegal firearms are coming into the se Islands from eastern Europe, Ussr etc.
Over here we have a complete ban on hand guns since the Dunblane shootings. It was a knee jerk reaction to crass mistakes in the system of licening.
Now we have similar problems with guns to yours….. it seems to be gang related over here.
My own son shoots, he has a permit and goes to Bisley from time to time…I’m sure if I had not introduced him to a shooting club he would have found some way to own a gun …. being intelligent and law abiding he’d probably have gone for so called heritage weapons.
Myself, I shot when in the cadet force in School(and was quite good) and from time to time I use an air rifle to shoot targets. (I’d like to get rid of the darn foxes that we have literally down our streetbut will have to leave that to “experts”)
Thugs will always find some weapon…knives are prominent as are various types of dog…
However, I appreciate your feelings about these things…

I’m no prude when it comes to firearms.
I have been clay shooting on a number of occasions and I have enjoyed the skill involved.
I went shooting pheasants once …. once was enough … I couldn’t understand how shooting birds for no apparent reason other than shooting them could be called sport ….. especially when a bad shot saw a pheasant fly past with one remaining leg.
It’s just that the idiots are more likely to have a dangerous access to guns. The criminals with guns have no respect for life. Guns need to be rigidly regulated or it will end up as a free for all.
Unfortunately, when it comes to crime, gun regulation doesn’t work.
I live in South Africa where violent crime is a daily occurrence. Illegal firearms are everywhere, some selling for as cheap as 300 rands (that’s less than 30 euros). our gun control legislation is extremely (even ludicrously) strict, but it makes no difference. In a country where it is almost impossible for a law abiding citizen to own a gun, criminals are buying them for less money than it cost to buy a pair of pants.
I am neither anti nor pro guns, but i do believe that everyone should have the right to defend themselves. Introducing more strict gun control may avoid the occasional crime of passion, but it’ll do little to curb criminal activity. After all, no criminal wants his offending weapon registered in his own name.
Hi Guys
We have no gun crime in Ireland, like there is in the UK were guns are banned to the law abiding people. I would welcome all the complainers to come to limerick, follow the tourist trail, lern our history, drink in our bars, meet our people, and shoot in our ranges. I think you’ll find that you have been missing something more than the bull’s eye! Up Limerick
Im a gun owner from Limerick. We have come 5th & 7th out of 37 international pistol teams shooting in Germany in January 08. I have shot clay, rifle, pistol and can tell you its a sport of gentlemen. Limerick is a fine city & county with fair & friendly Gards. I have walked the streets at all hours and felt safe. I would suggest the people who are anti gun are anti freedom. Its a tradition of a class based world started here by the English. If these people were to have there way we would all be singing rule Britania
Indeed Tiger ….. Up Limerick!
PaddyBlogger, we need to look at our own problems in Dublin. Dublin is Murder city because of all the stuff thats going on over the past few years.
I was in Limerick recently and had a great time.
whats wrong with law abiding people owning hand guns would make criminals think twice before entering your home we have a right to protect or families and home
