Michelle Smith - an embarrassment to Ireland

Michelle Smith - an embarrassment to Ireland

I saw Michelle Smith (de Bruin) on television tonight.

Smith received a four year ban for tampering with a urine sample.

It was contaminated with alcohol.

No reasonable explanation was ever provided by Smith. She also had a habit of not being available for random out-of-competition testing.

3 Gold and 1 Bronze at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta were all for nought.

She should have relinquished her medals.

Her actions tarnished them.

She also shamed her country.

We cheered her on when she won the medals.

Then she let us down.

Go away Michelle!

I’d be interested to hear why she was on the telly, Paddy?

The only one I ever felt sorry for in the whole unpleasant saga, was her father. He didn’t deserve to suffer any shame.

Bejaysus, where did that come from, Mr Paddy? I’m not saying I disagree, mind.

What was she on TV for?

Aussie swimmers have always been considered clean . . until recently when a drug lab was discovered in one of their houses. I don’t really care too much for the olympics but the intrusion of drugs (and alcohol) is cheating by any standards.

The whole tainting of sports with drugs destroys what sports should stand for.

My posting came from the fact that Smith was interviewed on ‘Nationwide’ (R.T.É. 1) as part of a look into Kells.

She was a ‘famous person’ who settled in the area …. now doing ‘good’ as a barrister.

Her smiley face and her sheer audacity to appear on our screens annoyed me. She brought shame to our country yet her brazenesss caused her to ‘carry on regardless’!

    Again …. I say …

    Go away Michelle.

Michelle Smith and Marion Jones - women who excelled through illegal means shame us all. Sadly, I defended both of them to my friends at the time, only to be proven wrong.

That was a RECREATIONAL drug lab baino. And in the house of a RETIRED swimmer. Facts? Don’t bother with them.

well,, isen’t irish cancer to knock anyone that does well. Michelle won her medals and was drug tested and PASSED the tests at the olympics and shame on us we turned our backs on her.. whatever happened with the subsequent test that was infected with alcohol we’ll never know..

GC ~ Baino still related the facts! By the way what’s the differenece between a recreational drug and an illegal drug? And so what if the swimmer was retired …… the swimmer still had the reputation of his/her country to uphold. Logically and quite justifiably it could be assumed that the swimmer had imbibed in ‘recreational’ drug use prior to retiring.

Seamus ~ What has cancer got to do with it?

Michelle Smith was a name synonymous with winning/swimming/honour etc. Now it’s synonymous with cheating. It’s no wonder that Michelle herself changed her name to Michelle de Bruin!

She kept on using Smith for as long as it paid dividends for her …. as soon as she changed career she became de Bruin.

Smith/de Bruin still brought shame to her country in my books.
