Thomas Edison lit us up!

Thomas Edison lit us up with a workable electric light in his workshop on this day in 1879!

Now John Gormley wants us to embrace those new fangled CFL bulbs.

Thanks Mr. Edison and good night!

    I think we’re supposed to switch to them by 2012 which is a problem if I’m in my current house as the old ‘downlights’ don’t suit the new globes! Personally it’s a good move but it would be better if we encouraged people to use them for the ‘savings’ rather than forced the change.(Mind you it’s mandatory to have fire alarms as well but I haven’t installed mine yet!)

    We’re on changeover in March 2009.

    No problem with them in theory ….. initial changeover cost is an annoyance and the fact that they takes ages to ‘brighten’ up. What id I just need to get something quickly from a room …. it won’t be bright enough before I switch it off again!

    The Green party are a pain in the hole …. their ‘green’ policies end up costing money.

    I’m all for going green but why does it have to cost me deep in my pocket?

    Bah humbug ….

    Paddy, I never realised you were such a flasher. :shock:

    I have some of those CFL bulbs they replaced bulbs that had been in use for at least 20 years. One of the bulbs was so old that the plaster/cement had worked loose from the base and the glass turned while the base of it stayed put. It still worked!

    Paddy, they don’t take ‘ages’ to warm up, just a couple of seconds then if anything they’re a bit too bright. I have some installed in newer downlight fittings and they last for ages like 2 years or more so they’re cheaper in the long run.

    Grannymar – are you saying you had a normal lightbulb that lasted 20 years! Sheesh . . mustn’t have turned it on much!

    @Baino

    I am! They were a set of three in the centre ceiling lights in the living room. Used regularly due to the fagaries of Irish daylight throughout the year.
