Welcome to Limerick!
“Limerick: Open your mind, hand over your wallet.”
“An ideal destination for sightseers to watch drive-by shootings, muggings and Piebald ponies crashing through housing estates.
A five-day break will cost you 240 pounds, your wallet, your keys and whatever else you had in your jacket.”
Limerick people may not agree with the sentiment expressed in the video.
It does, however, have a little tinge of truth to it!

Jaysus Paddy, I think you have a passion, it’s blogging. And you do a grand job of it. That’s some output sir.
Weekends allow me time to have my say. My output usually drops during the week.
By the time I get to blogging on a week night it’s usually late and I’m too tired to write anything of consequence.
I hope you don’t teach these prejudices to your class
There isn’t a prejudiced bone in my body. If we can’t poke fun at ourselves then there is something wrong. I will probably poke fun at every county in Ireland at some stage on this blog. I’ve already poked fun at Paddy the Irish man …. has that prejudiced me?
I am not prejudiced against Limerick.
As a matter of fact, having trained there and having relations there, I have a great respect for the city. I enjoyed my time there and would have had no problem staying there if I found a job there at the time.
It’s equality all the way in my class …. I’m a firm believer in it.
If you are equality all the way then why does this article lack balance. Sure, you are likely to get mugged in Limerick, but the same can be said for any county in the country.
Crime is not an issue which one particular community should be singled out on, it is a problem shared by communities all over the country
Indeed, crime doesn’t recognise borders or boundaries. And yes, one can equally be mugged in any part of the country as much as Limerick.
The quotation in the post is from the video. The reference to the ‘tinge of truth’ is to the recent spate of gangland shootings that have occurred there.
And yes, again, I could equally say it of any other county .. I probably will when the opportunity arises.
The article/post was based on the video. I didn’t post it to debate the merits of it being accurate or not.
I posted it because it made me laugh. It hasn’t changed my view of Limerick in any way.
As I said in my last comment I have a great respect for the city and I enjoyed every minute of my time when I lived there.
So you show that respect by propagating disrespectful statements?
I would expect better from someone your age, expecially someone as well educated as you.
In addition, those two dead men had families, I hope they don’t have a problem with you using their deaths as justification for posting this.
It’s a joke … not a statement of fact.
I don’t accept that I’m propagating anything other than the fact that we can laugh at ourselves.
People who read my blog will see that the post is not meant to be taken as a sign of disrepect to Limerick.
Bringing my age and my education into the equation has nothing to do with it.
If you still think my post is prejudiced …. all I can say is you’re wrong.
Nope …. I’m not using anybody’s death as justification to post this.
1 The post is pregudiced a) because it claims that limerick people are blinkered to the crime problem in there city. from the post “Limerick people may not agree with the sentiment expressed in the video”
2 You are propagating a misconception that Limerick is the only place that crime occurs in Limerick because you have failed to mention any other place in the country with crime issues. I suggest you look up the word “propagate” in the dictionary.
a: to cause to spread out and affect a greater number or greater area : extend b: to foster growing knowledge of, familiarity with, or acceptance of (as an idea or belief) : publicize c: to transmit (as sound or light) through a medium
3. You did use the deaths of those men to justify this post. You said in your comment “The reference to the ‘tinge of truth’ is to the recent spate of gangland shootings that have occurred there.” In short, the death of those two men is what inspired you to put the “tinge of truth” comment into your post.
It’s a joke …. no more …. no less!
1. As evidenced from your comments …. I was right!
2. The post was only in relation to the video, which was about Limerick. Why would I bring any other county into the post. Their day will come.
3. The death of two men had nothing to do with the ‘tinge of truth’ …. the tinge of truth was in relation to the recent spate of gangland shootings … I made no specific reference to any particular person’s death.
Propagation of any misconception against Limerick is unintended. Maybe I should put an errors and omissions excepted - E&OE caveat at the end of the posting.
1. No, you are wrong. People in Limerick wil be the first to tell you that there is a crime problem there, but you claimed that they would disagree with the assertion that there is a crime problem there. Your statement is therefore wrong.
2. As someone from Limerick, I think I am perfectly entitled to criticise anyone who propagates this throwback to when it was trendy to knock Limerick. As for your previous claim that “it’s ok to laugh at ourselves” I suggest you go do your research on the origins of the original recording. It was not made in Limerick, so cannot be classed as “laughing at ourselves.” As for other counties days will come, it will be for the people of those areas to defend the reputation of where they come from at that time. Personally I think that a 40 year old man knocking an area of the country like this is pathetic.
3 The two dead men were the last two victims of the “spate of recent gangland shootings” you cannot take the piss out of the recent spate of gangland shootings without including the shootings in which they died.
You cannot claim unintentional propagation of anything because you intentionally chose material which ridicules Limerick. therefore your offer to put E and OE at the end of the post would be pointless, and false.
1. I said ‘May’
2. Laughing at ourselves - I was referring to the country as a whole. I haven’t personally insulted you so why have you started personally attacking me?
3. I never took the ‘piss’ as you call it out of the latest two victims. You are the one who is continually referring to them. Not me.
The reference to E&OE was a flippant remark not a statement of fact that I was going to place it there.
It’s patently obvious that we’re not going to agree over this matter. You don’t know me and I don’t know you. I have explained where I was coming from with the post. You can choose to accept that explanation or not. If you choose to continue commenting on my blog I would appreciate you keeping the personal attacks on me out of it.
1. I said ‘May’
So, knowing that it would offend a certain community in the country, you chose to post it anyway right.
2. Laughing at ourselves - I was referring to the country as a whole. I haven’t personally insulted you so why have you started personally attacking me?
You haven’t mentioned a single other part of the country in either your comments or your post. It is only now you are claiming that you meant laughing at the entire country, but the post itself is only about Limerick.
3. I never took the ‘piss’ as you call it out of the latest two victims. You are the one who is continually referring to them. Not me.
You referred to recent shootings, you cannot get more recent than those two.
I don’t particularly intend commenting any further anyway, it is plainly obvious that you are happy to take the piss out of people, using material they clearly find offensive. Again I suggest you do the research on the material you posted as a) it was created in 1998 before even the first killing in 2000, and it indeed was, and still is considered offensive.
My expression of an expectation that someone of your age and in your position should have a better understanding of what might offend people is not a personal attack.
1. Nope …. never said I knew it would offend anybody. My crystal ball wasn’t consulted that day. The sky ‘may’ fall down ….. and then again it ‘may’ not. It ‘may’ offend … then again it ‘may’ not offend …. crystal ball time again.
2. Hello Limerick (city - not you personally) …. I joked about Paddy the Irish man last week …. so that constitutes me posting about laughing at ourselves.
3. I still haven’t referred to any particular person.
1998 …. 2008 … so what? The reason I posted the video was the fact that it made me laugh …. would you have prefered it if I said that Limerick people may not find it funny if I referred to the word ’stabbing’? The video was posted at a time when Limerick is to the fore because of gangland incidents/shootings.
You could have fooled me with your ‘pathetic’ reference in the same sentence as references to me personally. What you said was ‘Personally I think that a 40 year old man knocking an area of the country like this is pathetic.’ …. and that’s not a personal attack?
No, it is a statement of fact. someone of that age, whether it be you or anyone else, should know better. If you consider that a personal attack then that is your problem., which is pretty much the attitude you are taking to the offensiveness of what you posted.
As to your first point, you should have considered that before posting then, shouldn’t you.
To your second point, It is irrelevent what you posted last week, it is what you posted here tonight is what is in dispute.
1998 …. 2008 … so what? The reason I posted the video was the fact that it made me laugh …. would you have prefered it if I said that Limerick people may not find it funny if I referred to the word ’stabbing’? That is a lie, you posted this only a few hours ago. two weeks after the last shooting incident in Limerick. There were two shootings in the last 24 hours though , one in Galway and one in Dublin.
Fact …. my blog …. my problem … correct!
I did consider it …. i said ‘may’!
What I posted last week is relevant on my blog … it shows intent!
Getting personal again? Calling me a liar now! Tut Tut!
Yes I posted this a few hours ago … it’s about Limerick not Galway or Dublin AND amazingly enough Limerick is to the fore because of gangland incidents. It has been on the news regularly for the last few weeks/months.
As you’ve decided to take the commentary to the level of personal attacks I’m going to call a halt to this conversation.
Not once did I throw a personal insult in your direction. You have insulted me twice both in your use of the word ‘pathetic’ and in calling me a liar.
I have explained the reason behind the posting and I have also explained that there is no malice behind it. You continue to assert that I had an ulterior motive for my posting.
It was a joke! If you take offence from it then to use your own words ‘that’s your problem’!
I have no more to say on the matter. If you persist in personally attacking me I will spam your comments and disallow further comments. I should have done it already with your last comment calling me a liar.
Children! Children!
